LINKIN PARK, METALLICA Among Top CD Sellers For Year, Decade

LINKIN PARK's debut record, Hybrid Theory, was the best-selling record of 2001, according to Soundscan, the music industry's record keeper of sales for all music products. The California pop-metal quintet sold a staggering 4.8 million copies of their first CD in the US during the twelve months ended December 31st, thanks in no small part to MTV's unwavering support of the band throughout the period. Elsewhere, STAIND's Break the Cycle ended the year in fifth place, having shifted 4.2 million copies, according to Soundscan. Meanwhile, in the “best-selling records of the past decade” category, the only metal or hard rock act to have made an appearance on the list was METALLICA, whose Metallica CD shifted 13 million copies during 1992-2001 for a third-place showing—right behind SHANIA TWAIN's Come On Over (14 million) and ALANIS MORISSETTE's Jagged Little Pill (13.9 million).
